Information on Croatia

Extending from the eastern edge of the Alps to the east coast of the Adriatic Sea is a crescent shaped country: Croatia. The Republic of Croatia is actually made up of more than a thousand unique islands and many fascinating coastal towns that are perfect holiday destinations for any eager traveler. This small country surprisingly possesses so much beauty and history, no wonder it was named Destination of the Year by the National Geographic Adventure Magazine in 2006.

Croatian terrain is highly diverse. There are vast plains, lakes and beautiful rolling hills in the north and northeastern tip. Part of the Dinaric Alps is punctuated by immensely wooded mountains while the northern seacoast is characterized by rocky coastlines.

Summers in Croatia are warm and dry. Starting early April until late October, Croatia is perfect for outdoor adventures, nature-tripping, swimming and underwater adventure. Cruising the Croatian Adriatic in yachts and exploring secluded lighthouses are experiences worth having. During summer, the air temperature is at 26°C with the sea temperature reaching to 22°C. With about 260 sunshine days in a year, Croatia is among the sunniest regions in the Mediterranean. Winters are mild and damp in the country. The average temperature during the winter season is about 12°C.

The Republic of Croatia is subdivided into 21 counties, with Zagreb as its largest city and capital state. Zagreb is the primary industrial center of the republic. Other important cities are Dubrovink, Karlovac, Osijek, Split, Pula, Rijeka, Samobor and Zadar, Dubrovnik is a historic coastal city rich with culture. This city is a center for the arts with its numerous galleries and theatre stages. Split is an ancient port city, home to Roman ruins. Pula, the biggest town in Istria, prides itself of a Roman Ampitheathre.

Culturally rich, Croatia has a deep artistic, literary and musical tradition and diverse cuisine. The country also boasts eighth national parks and six World Heritage sites. Croatia is also known for producing a list of notable people and is also recognized in the world of clothing as the birthplace of the necktie or the cravat.

Peak season for tourism is from July and August. Hotel accommodation is quite expensive during this time and all premier tourist destinations are packed. But during April, May, September and October, the prices are relatively low, reduced by up to 50%. Private rooms are popular in Croatia. You can visit a tourist office (found in each town) and have them arrange your accommodation. Hotels in Croatia are plenty. They are of good value but higher-class accommodation doesn’t come cheap.

More and more foreigners are interested in buying a property and moving to Croatia because of its temperate weather, beautiful parks, pure beaches, hospitable people and colorful culture. This accounts for the boom of real estate in the country. Wherever you choose to live and whatever your budget, you are sure top find the perfect abode for you or even the whole family. There are countless beautiful villas, modern apartment buildings and rustic old houses to meet your needs and complement your lifestyle, don’t hang around for too long though or you may miss out on that ideal investment property or permanent residence in Croatia, grab a bargain now!
